This 6-day desert tour from Tangier to Marrakech is designed for travelers entering Morocco from Spain or flying directly into Tangier. It packs the country's most iconic experiences into six days: the blue medina of Chefchaouen, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the imperial cities of Meknes and Fes, and the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.
You begin in Tangier, the Mediterranean gateway to Africa. Depending on your arrival, you may have time to explore the medina, the Kasbah, or the Caves of Hercules before heading south. The drive to Chefchaouen is short — just two to three hours — so you reach the blue city with time to wander the alleys before sunset.
From there, the route follows the same legendary path as our longer tours: south through Volubilis and Meknes to Fes, across the Middle Atlas to the Sahara, through the Todra Gorge and Dades Valley, past Aït Ben Haddou, and over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass to Marrakech.
Because this is a private tour, the pacing is yours to control. If you arrive in Tangier on the morning ferry from Tarifa, we can start immediately. If you need a night in Tangier to recover from the crossing, we can delay the departure.
Honest note: Six days is the minimum for this route. You will cover roughly 1,400 km, and Day 4 involves roughly seven hours of driving to reach the Sahara. You change hotels five nights in a row. If you want time to linger in Chefchaouen or recover after the desert, consider adding a night in Marrakech at the end — or look at our 8-day Casablanca tour which spreads the same distance across more days. But if your goal is to see Morocco's highlights in the shortest possible time without joining a group bus, this tour works.

Your driver meets you at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, your hotel, or the ferry port if you are arriving from Spain. Depending on your arrival time, you may have a brief orientation drive through Tangier's medina, the Kasbah, and the Corniche before heading south.
The road to Chefchaouen climbs into the Rif Mountains and takes roughly two to three hours. You will arrive in the early afternoon with plenty of time to check into your riad and explore the blue medina. Walk to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view over the town, visit the Ras El Ma spring, or simply wander the alleys as they turn golden in the late light.

After breakfast, enjoy a free morning in Chefchaouen. The medina is quietest before 10:00 AM, and the light on the blue walls at this hour is excellent for photography.
In the late morning, drive south to Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mosaics and triumphal arches here date back nearly 2,000 years. Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities, and see Bab Mansour, one of the finest monumental gates in the country. Arrive in Fes in the evening.

Today is dedicated entirely to Fes el Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world. With a licensed local guide, you will navigate the 9,000-plus streets and visit the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah (Jewish quarter), a traditional pottery cooperative, and the Bou Inania Madrasa with its intricate carved plaster and cedarwood screens.
The highlight for many is the Chouara Tanneries, where leather is still processed in stone vats as it has been for centuries. You will also see Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 CE and recognized as the world's oldest continuously operating university. After lunch, the afternoon is free to explore or rest.

After breakfast, leave Fes and head south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane, a town with red-roofed houses and manicured parks so unlike the rest of Morocco that locals call it the Switzerland of Morocco. Continue to the cedar forests of Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques live in the trees and often wander down to the roadside.
After lunch in Midelt, the landscape shifts to rocky plateaus and then the spectacular Ziz Valley, a ribbon of palm groves cut through volcanic rock. By late afternoon, you reach Merzouga and check into your hotel near the dunes.

This is the longest single drive of the trip, but the scenery changes so dramatically — from cedar forests to rocky desert to palm groves — that the day feels like several journeys in one.
Wake early for the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes — the colors change from grey to pink to gold in less than twenty minutes. After breakfast, return by camel or 4×4 and meet your driver.
The route continues through Rissani, with its authentic traditional market, and Erfoud, where craftsmen polish 500-million-year-old fossils into furniture and art. Then comes the Todra Gorge, where cliffs rise 300 meters on either side of a narrow riverbed. Walk through the gorge and have lunch in the shade of the cliffs before continuing to the Dades Valley for the night.

After breakfast, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs west through the Rose Valley and Kelaat M'Gouna, then through Skoura Oasis into Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital. If time permits, stop at the Atlas Film Studios.
The main stop is Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved fortified ksar in Morocco. Walk through the ancient mud-brick village and climb to the top for views across the valley. After lunch, cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2,260 m) and arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
Your driver drops you at your riad or hotel in Marrakech, where the tour ends.
