This 5-day desert tour from Tangier to Marrakech is designed for travelers who want to experience Morocco's highlights — from Chefchaouen and Fes to the Sahara and Aït Ben Haddou — without spending a full week on the road.
Whether you arrive in Tangier by flight or ferry from Spain, your trip begins in the Rif Mountains with an afternoon in Chefchaouen. From there, you'll continue south through the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the historic city of Meknes, and the old medina of Fes.
After Fes, the scenery changes completely as you cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, pass through the Ziz Valley, and reach Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. There, you'll ride a camel into the Sahara at sunset before spending the night in a desert camp.
The final two days take you through Rissani, Erfoud, Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley, and Aït Ben Haddou, before crossing the High Atlas Mountains and arriving in Marrakech.
This is an active itinerary, with a different place to stay each night. If you'd like more time to explore Fes with a local guide, our 6-day Tangier-to-Marrakech tour is the better choice. But if your priority is to see the Sahara, imperial cities, mountain landscapes, and famous kasbahs in the shortest practical time, this 5-day private tour is a strong option.
An Honest Note About the Pace
Five days is the fastest practical way to travel from Tangier to Marrakech while still including the Sahara.
You'll cover roughly 1,500 km during the trip, and Day 3 is the longest driving day at around seven to eight hours. You'll also change accommodation every night.
The itinerary includes an overnight stay in Fes, but not a full guided day in the medina. If spending more time in Fes matters to you, we recommend the 6-day version, which gives you a more relaxed pace.
If your goal is to experience as much of Morocco as possible in five days, without joining a large group or spending the trip on a tourist bus, this itinerary is a great fit.

The drive to Chefchaouen takes around two to three hours. Arriving in the afternoon, you'll have time to explore the famous blue medina on foot.
Walk through the narrow blue-painted streets, visit Outa el Hammam Square, and, if time allows, head up toward the Spanish Mosque for views over the town and surrounding mountains.

After breakfast at your riad, enjoy a little more time in Chefchaouen before continuing south.
Your first major stop is Volubilis, where you can explore the remains of one of Morocco's best-preserved Roman archaeological sites. Walk among ancient columns, mosaics, and ruins dating back almost 2,000 years.
Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Visit the impressive Bab Mansour gate and explore the historic area around the former royal city.
In the afternoon, continue to Fes and arrive in the evening.
You'll stay in a traditional riad inside the Fes medina, giving you the chance to enjoy the atmosphere of the old city after the day's journey.

Today is the longest driving day, but it's also one of the most scenic.
Leave Fes in the morning and head into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane, known for its mountain setting and distinctive architecture, before continuing toward the cedar forests near Azrou.
With a bit of luck, you'll see Barbary macaques in the forest.
Continue through the Middle Atlas toward Midelt, an important stop between northern Morocco and the Sahara. From there, the landscape becomes more arid as you descend toward the spectacular Ziz Valley.
By late afternoon, you'll reach Merzouga and the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Leave the vehicle behind and begin your camel trek across the sand. Reach your desert camp around sunset, settle into your private tent, enjoy dinner, and spend the evening around the campfire with traditional music under the desert sky.

Wake early if you'd like to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes.
After breakfast, return from the desert by camel or 4x4 before continuing west.
Travel through Rissani, the historic market town linked to the old caravan routes, then continue to Erfoud, known for its fossils and stone workshops.
From there, head toward the dramatic Todra Gorge, where enormous limestone cliffs rise on both sides of the valley.
Take a walk through the gorge before continuing into the Dades Valley.
The day ends among the red-rock landscapes and winding roads of the Dades region, where you'll spend the night.

After breakfast, continue along the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.
Pass through the Rose Valley and the palm-filled landscapes around Skoura before reaching Ouarzazate.
Continue to Aït Ben Haddou, the famous fortified ksar built from earth and clay. Take time to walk through its narrow lanes and explore the historic buildings.
From Aït Ben Haddou, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains.
Cross Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, with mountain views along the way, before descending toward Marrakech.
