Tour Overview

Our overnight camel trek in Merzouga is less of a tour and more of an invitation to slow down. You won't just see the Sahara Desert—you will feel it.

Upon arrival, we welcome you with a traditional glass of Moroccan mint tea before meeting your camel guide. As the sun begins to drop, you'll head into the towering Erg Chebbi dunes. The light on the sand at this hour is unlike anything else on Earth, shifting from pale gold to a deep, glowing orange.

At our traditional camp, you'll enjoy a home-cooked Moroccan feast, listen to the rhythmic beat of Berber drums around the fire, and sleep in a place where the only light comes from the stars. Whether you are looking for peace or adventure, this is the night your Morocco trip becomes unforgettable.

Honest note: This is a camping experience in the desert, not a hotel. Standard tents have real beds and shared bathroom facilities. If you need en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and air conditioning, upgrade to our luxury desert camp. The dunes are beautiful, but they are also sandy—expect to find sand in your shoes for the next two days. It's part of the experience.

Flying into Errachidia? You can be on this camel trek the same day you land. Book our Errachidia airport transfer and combine it with this overnight experience. View all Errachidia desert tours →

Overnight Camel Trek in Merzouga Itinerary

1 Camel ride at sunset in Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga

DAY 1 - Merzouga ⇢ Camel Trek ⇢ Desert Camp

Arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon. After mint tea and a short rest, meet your camel guide and head into the dunes as the sun begins to set. The trek takes around 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the camp location — long enough to fully experience the desert, but not so long that it becomes uncomfortable.

Stop along the way for sunset photos—the light on the Erg Chebbi dunes at this hour changes the color of the sand in ways that are genuinely difficult to describe. At camp, settle in, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, and gather around the fire for Berber drumming. When the music winds down, the desert becomes hushed. Look up.

Accommodation: Desert camp in Erg Chebbi — dinner and breakfast included. A luxury camp upgrade with air conditioning is available on request.

2 Sahara sunrise over Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga

DAY 2 - Sahara Sunrise ⇢ Return to Merzouga

Set your alarm. The Sahara sunrise is one of those things that photos never quite capture—the way the light slowly spreads across the dunes while the whole desert shifts color in complete silence. After breakfast at camp, return to Merzouga by camel or 4x4—your choice—where the experience ends.

Return option: Return by camel, or upgrade to a quad bike ride for an even more exciting experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions before you book? Here are honest answers to help you plan your overnight camel trek in Merzouga.

It's about 1.5 hours of trekking. We've found this is the "sweet spot"—long enough to feel deep in the desert, but short enough to stay comfortable.

Keep it simple. A camera, a warm jacket (desert nights get cold!), and a scarf. We provide the rest, including secure storage for your large suitcases.

Our camels are well-trained and gentle. Our guides have grown up in these dunes and treat every guest like family.

It depends on the option you choose. Standard camps are comfortable and offer a genuine desert atmosphere with shared facilities. Luxury camps include private tents with proper beds, en suite bathrooms, and sometimes air conditioning. If privacy matters to you, just let us know when booking, and we'll arrange the right option for you.

Luxury camps include private bathrooms and hot showers inside the tent—far more comfortable than most people expect from a night in the Sahara. Standard camps have shared facilities nearby. If having a private bathroom is important to you, mention it when booking, and we'll make sure you're in the right camp.

Absolutely — if you'd rather not ride a camel, a 4x4 transfer to the camp can easily be arranged. Just let us know when booking, and we'll take care of it.

Yes, camel rides are gentle, and the pace is relaxed, making the trek a wonderful experience for families with children. Kids especially tend to love the camp night—the drumming, the stars, the whole atmosphere. It's just as popular with couples and solo travelers.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the sweet spots — warm days, cool nights, and that soft golden desert light that makes everything look incredible. Summer is genuinely hot during the day, especially in July and August, but sunsets and nights are still beautiful. Winter is quieter, more peaceful, and often better value — the skies are clearer, and the dunes feel like they're all yours. Just pack warm layers because the Sahara gets cold fast once the sun goes down.

Plans change — we get it. Just let us know at least 48 hours before departure and we'll arrange a full refund, no hassle. Cancellations within 48 hours are unfortunately non-refundable. Not 100% sure about your dates yet? Hold off until you're certain — it'll save any stress down the line. And if something unexpected comes up last minute, reach out as soon as you can and we'll do everything we can to help.

Amazing Desert Experience

Soha M., Ottawa, Canada ✔ Verified Traveler 7 days ago

We booked the overnight camel trek while visiting Morocco, and it ended up being the part we talk about most. Riding through the dunes at sunset felt like something out of a film—except it was completely real. The camp was far more comfortable than we expected, the food was genuinely good, and after dinner, everyone naturally gathered around the fire for music. Then everything went quiet. Just wind in the dunes and the most stars I've ever seen. Hard to explain how good that felt.

Amazing Desert Adventure

Cheryl P., Lexington, Kentucky ✔ Verified Traveler 2 weeks ago

I'll be honest—I wasn't entirely sure about sleeping in the desert. But it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. The camel ride into Erg Chebbi at sunset was peaceful and unhurried, and waking up early for sunrise was absolutely worth it. The camp staff was warm and welcoming, the food was excellent, and the whole experience felt genuinely relaxed—not overly polished or touristy. It just felt real.

Unforgettable journey

We did this trip as a family and loved every part of it. The dunes around Merzouga are incredible in person—especially in the late afternoon when the colors shift from gold to deep orange. Our kids were completely absorbed from the moment the camels set off. Sitting around the campfire after dinner, with Berber drums playing and a sky full of stars above us, was likely my favorite moment of the entire trip to Morocco. If you're thinking about doing it, go.
