Tour Overview

This is the tour for travelers who think like nomads: keep moving forward. You begin at Moulay Ali Cherif Airport in Errachidia, spend your first night in the Erg Chebbi dunes, and finish three days later in the red city of Marrakech. You never cover the same road twice.

The route is a greatest-hits of southern Morocco, but experienced in the correct geographical order. Day One is desert immersion: Erfoud, Rissani, Merzouga, camel trek, camp. Day Two is canyon and valley country: you drive north through the dramatic Todra Gorge, where cliffs rise 300 meters on both sides of a narrow river, then continue through the Dades Valley with its surreal rock formations and ancient kasbahs. Overnight in the valley or Ouarzazate. Day Three is the grand finale: Ait Ben Haddou, the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, and descent into Marrakech.

Because you start in Errachidia, you avoid the exhausting 10-hour drive from Marrakech that most tourists endure. You arrive in the Sahara fresh, and you arrive in Marrakech triumphant.

Honest note: This is a point-to-point tour. It works best if you are flying into Errachidia and out of Marrakech, or if Marrakech is your next destination. If you need to return to Errachidia, consider our 2-day round-trip tour instead. Also, Day Two involves roughly 4 to 5 hours of driving through mountain roads. The scenery is spectacular, but if you are prone to motion sickness, bring medication.

Itinerary

1 Erg Chebbi dunes

DAY 1 – Errachidia to Merzouga Desert

Pickup: Between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM from Errachidia airport or your hotel.

The drive to Merzouga takes roughly two hours with optional stops in Erfoud for fossils and Rissani for the souk.

Arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon. After mint tea and a short rest, mount your camel and ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The trek lasts about 90 minutes, with stops for photos and sandboarding. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Accommodation: Traditional Berber Desert Camp (private tent, dinner & breakfast included).

2 Todra Gorge

DAY 2 – Merzouga to Dades Valley or Ouarzazate

Wake before dawn for the sunrise climb. After breakfast and a camel ride back to the village, meet your driver and begin the journey north.

The route passes through Rissani and Erfoud, then turns northwest toward Tinghir. Here you enter the Todra Gorge, a massive fault in the High Atlas where the river has carved a path between cliffs up to 300 meters high. You will have time to walk the canyon floor and photograph the rock walls.

Continue to the Dades Valley, known for its bizarre rock formations, rose fields, and ancient kasbahs. Depending on timing and your preference, you overnight either in Boumalne Dades (valley views, quieter) or Ouarzazate (larger town, film studios nearby).

Accommodation: Hotel or guesthouse (dinner & breakfast included).

3 Ait Ben Haddou

DAY 3 – Dades Valley to Marrakech

After breakfast, drive the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" toward Ouarzazate (if you did not stay there). The main stop today is Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous ksar in Morocco. You will have roughly an hour to explore its narrow alleys and climb to the top for panoramic views.

From Ait Ben Haddou, ascend the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, the highest mountain road in Morocco at 2,260 meters. The pass offers sweeping views of Berber villages and snow-capped peaks, even in late spring. Descend toward Marrakech, arriving at your hotel or riad between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Total distance: approximately 650–700 km over three days.
