Tour Overview

If two or three days feels too rushed and you want time to truly breathe in the experience, this Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is for you. Over four days, you'll cross the High Atlas Mountains, explore the dramatic Dades and Todra Gorges, and finish with a sunset camel trek into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. It's one of the most complete desert journeys you can do from Marrakech — and by the time you return, you'll understand why so many travelers come back to experience it again.

Tour Highlights

  • Cross the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka Pass.
  • Explore Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco's most iconic landmarks.
  • Spend a night in Dades Gorge with canyon views that genuinely take your breath away.
  • Walk through Todra Gorge, where 300-metre rock walls rise on either side of you.
  • Ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset — one of those moments you don't forget.
  • Sleep under a blanket of Saharan stars in a luxury desert camp.
  • Discover the fossil town of Erfoud and the historic market of Rissani.

4-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour Itinerary

1 Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah

DAY 1 - Marrakech ⇢ Tizi n'Tichka Pass ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Ouarzazate ⇢ Dades Gorge

Your journey begins at 8:00 AM with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. From the moment you leave the city, the landscape starts to change. You'll climb steadily through the High Atlas Mountains, stopping at Berber villages along the way before reaching the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 metres — the views from up here are extraordinary.

From there, you'll descend toward Ait Ben Haddou, one of the best-preserved ancient kasbahs in Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's been a filming location for everything from Gladiator to Game of Thrones, but standing inside it, you forget all of that — it's just genuinely beautiful.

After lunch near Ouarzazate, you'll head east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through the Rose Valley and the Skoura Oasis before arriving at Dades Gorge as the light turns golden. Your hotel sits right on the edge of the canyon.

Accommodation: Hotel or riad in Dades Gorge — dinner and breakfast included

2 Todra Gorge

DAY 2 - Dades Gorge ⇢ Todra Gorge ⇢ Erfoud ⇢ Merzouga ⇢ Camel Trek

After breakfast, take a morning walk through the gorge before the road crowds arrive. The hairpin bends above the valley are some of the most photographed in Morocco — and for good reason.

Next stop is Todra Gorge, where the canyon narrows to just a few metres wide and the walls climb 300 metres above you. It's the kind of place that makes you feel very small in the best possible way.

You'll continue through the open desert landscapes of eastern Morocco, stopping in Erfoud to visit a fossil marble workshop — the area sits on an ancient seabed, and the fossilized marine life embedded in the rock is genuinely fascinating.

By late afternoon, you'll arrive in Merzouga. This is the moment. You'll mount your camel and head into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a 1.5-hour sunset trek — the light on the sand at this time of day is unlike anything else. Your luxury camp for the night is waiting on the other side, with a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber music around the fire, and a sky so full of stars it almost doesn't look real.

Accommodation: Luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi — dinner and breakfast included

3 Desert Camp

DAY 3 - Merzouga Desert ⇢ Alnif ⇢ N'kob ⇢ Draa Valley ⇢ Ouarzazate

Set your alarm. Climbing the dunes before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise is one of those experiences that's impossible to describe properly — you just have to be there. After breakfast at camp, ride the camels back to Merzouga and get ready for the road.

You'll stop in Rissani, a historic market town and the birthplace of Morocco's Alaouite dynasty. The souk here is the real thing — busy, colourful, and full of local life rather than tourist stalls.

The route back takes you through N'kob, a quiet oasis town surrounded by 45 kasbahs, and through the sweeping Draa Valley toward Ouarzazate, where you'll spend the night.

Accommodation: Hotel in Ouarzazate — dinner and breakfast included

4 Atlas Mountains

DAY 4 - Ouarzazate ⇢ High Atlas Mountains ⇢ Marrakech

Your last morning. If you're a film fan, the Atlas Film Studios in Ouarzazate is worth a quick visit — it's the largest film studio in Africa and still actively used for major productions. Entrance is around 50 MAD and not included in the tour price.

From there, you'll head back north through the High Atlas, stopping at argan oil cooperatives run by local women's collectives and pausing at viewpoints where the mountain panoramas are worth every minute. You'll be back in Marrakech by around 5:00 PM — tired, full of stories, and already thinking about when you can come back.

Highlight of Our Morocco Trip

James F., United States ✔ Verified Traveler 3 days ago

We did the 4-day tour as a family, and it turned out to be the highlight of our entire Morocco trip. Our guide, Idir, was fantastic from start to finish — knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely passionate about showing us his country. Ait Ben Haddou was stunning, the night in Dades Gorge was magical, and the camel trek into Erg Chebbi at sunset was something our kids will talk about for years.

So Glad We Chose This Tour

Christine B., United Kingdom ✔ Verified Traveler 2 weeks ago

I did this tour with my teenage son, and we had the most incredible time. The camp team was warm and welcoming, the food was delicious, and the evening entertainment around the fire was something we didn't expect but absolutely loved. One tip: get into the dunes in the middle of the day if you can — pure magic.

An Unforgettable Family Experience

Our family of four just finished this tour, and I genuinely can't recommend it enough. Our guide knew every stop inside out and made sure everyone was having a great time. The desert camp was the highlight — traditional dinner, Berber music around the fire, and a sunrise over the dunes that left us all speechless.
