Your tour begins with an early pick-up from your riad in Fes. The road heads south into the Middle Atlas Mountains, where the first stop is Ifrane. This mountain town is known for its tidy streets and alpine-style architecture—so distinct from the rest of Morocco that it has been called "the Switzerland of Morocco" for generations.
From there, continue to the cedar forests of Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques. After lunch in Midelt, the route changes dramatically as green hills give way to rocky plateaus and then to the Ziz Valley, with its vast stretches of palm groves and ancient oasis villages.

This is the day that makes the five-day itinerary truly stand out. After breakfast, you will set out to explore the wider Merzouga region. We begin in Khamlia, a village famous for its Gnawa musicians. You will hear their soulful music in its original context, not as a staged performance but as a living cultural tradition.
Leaving Khamlia, we enter the "Black Desert" where volcanic rock forms a landscape in stark contrast to the nearby dunes. You'll see the historic Mifis Mines, once used to extract lead and minerals, and stop for tea with a Berber nomad family, a real encounter with a way of life unchanged for centuries.
Weather permitting, we will stop at Merzouga Lake, a frequent destination for flamingos and other migratory birds. Your camel guide will be ready to take you on the trek into Erg Chebbi in the late afternoon. The sun sinks, and the dunes are deep orange from gold. The evening ends back at camp with dinner, Berber drumming around the fire, and a night under one of the clearest starlit skies in the world.

Get up early and watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, a highlight of the trip as the colours change on the sand. After breakfast at the camp, you ride back to Merzouga on a camel or by 4x4.
We then visit Rissani, a typical market town and ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty of Morocco. We carry on to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops where you can see beautifully made objects made from fossilised marine life from millions of years ago.
Then we arrive at the Todra Gorges. On either side of the riverbed, the limestone cliffs rise steeply, creating one of the most dramatic natural scenes in Morocco. You will have time to stroll through the gorge and have lunch in the shade of the cliffs. This afternoon, we will continue to the Dades Valley to visit the "Monkey Fingers" rock formations and ancient Kasbahs.

After breakfast, we travel along the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs." The route continues to the Skoura Oasis, a lush green palm grove that many shorter tours skip. Here, you can visit Kasbah Amridil, one of the best-preserved kasbahs in southern Morocco, offering a fascinating look at traditional fortified architecture.
We arrive in Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, in the afternoon. If time permits, you may visit the Atlas Film Studios (optional), where many world-famous films and series have been produced.

After lunch, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass. You will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening, where your 5-day journey concludes.
