DAY 1 - Marrakech ⇢ Tizi n'Tichka Pass ⇢ Ait Ben Haddou ⇢ Draa Valley ⇢ Zagora Desert

Your journey begins with a scenic drive south through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains. Along the way, enjoy short stops at panoramic viewpoints to admire the breathtaking mountain scenery and capture memorable photos.

After lunch near Ouarzazate, continue your adventure through the beautiful Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, famous for its lush palm groves, traditional kasbahs, and stunning desert landscapes.

By late afternoon, arrive at the Zagora Desert, where your camel caravan awaits. Enjoy a peaceful camel trek across the desert as the sun slowly sets, painting the dunes with beautiful golden and orange tones.

Upon arrival at your traditional desert camp, settle into your tent before enjoying a delicious Moroccan dinner. In the evening, gather around the campfire for traditional Berber music, drumming, and storytelling beneath a sky filled with stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions before you book? Here are clear, honest answers to help you plan your 2-day Zagora desert tour from Marrakech with confidence.

The drive takes around 7 to 8 hours, depending on stops, but don't let that put you off. The road is genuinely one of the best parts of the trip. You'll climb through the High Atlas Mountains, cross the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka Pass, stop at the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, and wind through the palm-lined Draa Valley before the desert finally opens up in front of you. By the time you reach Zagora, you'll already feel like you've seen a lot of Morocco.

Zagora is approximately 350 km (217 miles) from Marrakech. The route winds through mountain passes and desert valleys, so while the distance looks manageable on a map, the drive takes around 7 to 8 hours. That said, the scenery along the way is spectacular—most travelers agree the journey is half the experience.

Yes — just a different one, and the right choice really comes down to how much time you have. Zagora is ideal if you only have two days and want a genuine taste of the Sahara without a grueling drive. You get camel rides, a night at a desert camp, stunning sunsets, and a sky full of stars. What you won't get are the towering dunes that Merzouga is famous for — those require 3 to 4 days of travel from Marrakech. If big dunes are your priority and time isn't an issue, go to Merzouga. But if you want the best short desert tour from Marrakech, Zagora is the answer.

  • Private air-conditioned transport
  • Hotel or riad pickup and drop-off in Marrakech
  • One night in a traditional desert camp
  • Dinner and breakfast
  • Sunset camel ride
  • Scenic stops along the route

Keep it light — you're only away for two days:
  • Comfortable clothes you can layer
  • A warm jacket or fleece for the evening
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat or scarf
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A small overnight bag
  • Your camera or phone for the dunes
One thing most people underestimate: desert nights get genuinely cold, especially between October and February. The jacket isn't optional — pack it.

Absolutely. The itinerary is relaxed, camel rides are gentle, and the experience is enjoyable for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit — warm days, cool nights, and beautiful golden light for photos. Summer is very hot and can make long drives uncomfortable. Winter trips are quieter and often better value, but temperatures drop sharply after sunset, so come prepared with warm layers, and you'll be perfectly fine.

For most travelers, a guided tour is the smarter choice — and not just for the convenience. The route from Marrakech to Zagora covers winding mountain roads and long stretches of remote desert. With an experienced local driver, you can sit back, enjoy the scenery, and actually learn about the places you pass through instead of stressing about navigation. It also tends to work out cheaper than renting a car and arranging accommodation yourself. If you have extra days and want total freedom, independent travel is an option—but for a 2-day desert trip, guided is simply the better experience.

Most camps offer traditional Berber-style tents with real beds, blankets, and comfortable facilities—rustic, but far from rough. Standard camps give you an authentic desert experience exactly as it should feel. If you want more comfort, luxury camps offer private tents, en suite bathrooms, better bedding, and sometimes hot showers and electricity. Just let us know when booking, and we'll upgrade your accommodation to a luxury desert camp—no fuss, no surprises.

Worth every hour of the drive!

We did the 2-day tour from Marrakech to Zagora as a family and honestly didn't know what to expect. Our driver, Youssef, was fantastic — great English, really friendly, and clearly passionate about showing us his country. He stopped at Ait Ben Haddou and explained the history in a way that actually made us want to stay longer. The camel ride at sunset was a highlight for the kids, and the camp was way more comfortable than we imagined — real beds, a hot shower, and a proper dinner under the stars. My daughter still talks about it. Pro tip: bring a warm layer for the evening, even in spring. The desert gets cold fast once the sun goes down!

Do it. Just do it.

My partner and I were debating between Zagora and Merzouga and went with Zagora because of the shorter drive — the best decision we made. Our guide Rachid was brilliant, stopped whenever we asked for photos, told us about everything we passed through, and even recommended a great lunch spot in Ouarzazate. The camp blew us away — we were expecting basic tents but got proper beds, warm blankets, and a shared dinner with other travelers that turned into a really fun evening. Woke up early for the sunrise over the dunes and genuinely couldn't believe we were there. Highly recommended.

Best part of my whole Morocco trip

I did this solo and was a little unsure going in, but our driver-guide Hamid made me feel completely at ease from the start. He was funny, spoke excellent English, and knew every story behind every stop — Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley, the kasbahs along the way. By the time we reached the desert, I felt like I understood Morocco in a way I hadn't before. The camel ride was unforgettable, and the camp was genuinely cozy — real bed, hot food, and the most stars I've ever seen in my life. I went to bed with no phone signal and woke up with no regrets. Pro tip: tip your guide well — they make the whole experience what it is.
