The Fes to Marrakech road is one of Morocco's outstanding overland journeys, and four days is the right amount of time to do it properly. You leave the ancient medina of Fes and head south through cedar forests and mountain towns before the landscape opens into the vast palm groves of the Ziz Valley and the golden dunes of the Sahara.
What sets this tour apart from the 3-day Fes to Marrakech tour is Day 2 — a full day spent inside the desert rather than passing through it. You will visit a nomad family and learn how people have lived in this landscape for generations, explore the ruins of the old Mascara mine, listen to the hypnotic rhythms of Gnawa music in Khamlia, and watch flamingos and migratory birds at Merzouga Lake before the afternoon camel trek into the dunes.
From the Sahara, the route continues through the fossil markets of Erfoud and Rissani, into the dramatic canyon of the Todra Gorges, and through the Dades Valley with its ancient kasbahs and extraordinary rock formations. The final day follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Rose Valley and Ouarzazate before the high point of the journey—literally—at the Tizi n'Tichka Pass in the High Atlas, arriving in Marrakech as the sun drops behind the mountains.
We will pick you up early from your riad in Fes and head south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The first stop is Ifrane, a town whose alpine architecture and manicured streets look so unlike the rest of Morocco that locals have called it the "Switzerland of Morocco" for decades. From there, the road continues through the cedar forests of Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques live in the trees and often wander close to the roadside.
After lunch in Midelt, the landscape begins its dramatic transformation. Green mountains give way to rocky plateaus, then to the Ziz Valley, a long ribbon of palm groves cut through volcanic rock, with oasis villages tucked along its edges. The drive through the valley is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in Morocco.
By late afternoon, you will reach Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara. Check into your hotel near the dunes, rest, and prepare for a full day in the desert tomorrow.
Driving Distance: approx. 430 km
Driving Time: around 7–8 hours with stops
Accommodation: Hotel in Merzouga
Meals: Dinner is included.
This experience is the day that makes the 4-day tour worth choosing over the 3-day version.
After breakfast, you will head out into the desert with your guide. The morning begins with a visit to a nomadic family — people who still live in the traditional way in this landscape, moving with the seasons and their animals. It is not a staged experience; it is a conversation over tea about a life that is genuinely different from anything most travellers have encountered.
From there, you will visit the ruins of the old Mascara mine, then continue to Khamlia, home to a community descended from West African slaves brought across the Sahara centuries ago. They have preserved the Gnawa musical tradition — a hypnotic, percussion-driven music with deep spiritual roots — and you will have the chance to hear it performed in the village.
In the early afternoon, Merzouga Lake is worth a stop if the water is high enough. The salt lake attracts flamingos and dozens of migratory bird species, and it is one of the most unexpected sights in this part of Morocco.
By late afternoon, the camel guide will be waiting. You will ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun drops towards the horizon, the sand shifting from yellow to orange to deep red as the light fades. The night continues at the desert camp — traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber drumming around the fire, and one of the clearest skies you will ever sleep under.
Driving Distance: approx. 50 km
Driving Time: 2–3 hours
Accommodation: Luxury desert camp in Erg Chebbi
Meals: Dinner and breakfast are included.
The desert is most beautiful at dawn. Set your alarm early – the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes moves quickly, and the colours shift from grey to pink to gold in less than twenty minutes. After breakfast at camp, you will ride back to Merzouga by camel or by 4x4, depending on your preference.
The morning continues through Rissani — the ancestral home of Morocco's Alaouite royal dynasty and one of the most authentic market towns in the south — and Erfoud, where craftsmen cut and polish ancient ammonite fossils into furniture, tiles, and decorative objects.
From Erfoud, the road leads to the Todra Gorges. The cliffs here rise 300 metres on either side of a narrow riverbed, and their scale catches most visitors off guard. What looks like a canyon from a distance reveals itself, up close, to be something closer to a cathedral. You will have time to walk through the gorge and have lunch in the shade of the cliffs.
The afternoon drive continues into the Dades Valley, past ancient kasbahs and Berber villages, to the extraordinary Monkey Fingers rock formations that rise from the valley floor. You will spend the night here with views of the canyon above.
Driving Distance: approx. 200 km
Driving Time: around 4–5 hours with stops
Accommodation: Hotel in Dades Valley
Meals: Dinner and breakfast are included.
The final day covers the most cinematic ground of the tour. After breakfast, the road follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs west through Kelaat M'Gouna, known as the Rose City, where the surrounding fields produce Damascus roses that are harvested every spring for rosewater and perfume.
Ouarzazate is Morocco's film capital, home to the Atlas Film Studios — one of the largest film studio complexes in the world — which has hosted productions from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
The main stop of the day is Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best-preserved fortified ksar in Morocco. You will have time to walk through the ancient mud-brick village, climb to the top for views across the valley, and have lunch before the final leg.
From Ouarzazate, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass. At 2,260 metres, it is the highest major road pass in Morocco. The drive is winding and dramatic, with views that open across the mountains in every direction. You will arrive in Marrakech in the evening and be dropped off at your accommodation.
