The 2-day Errachidia tour gives you what the 1-day rush cannot: context. You do not just see the dunes—you understand the desert that surrounds them. You meet the people who live here, from fossil craftsmen in Erfoud to date farmers in the Tafilalt oasis, and you experience the Sahara with enough time to actually slow down.
Day One is about arrival and immersion. You travel the same short route to Merzouga—roughly two hours—but with meaningful stops. In Erfoud, you can visit a fossil workshop where 500-million-year-old trilobites are polished into furniture and art. In Rissani, if your timing aligns with market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday), you walk through a souk that has changed little in centuries. Nomads arrive in Land Cruisers with sheep and goats. Spices are sold from open sacks. It is raw, loud, and completely authentic.
By evening you are in the dunes. Day Two is yours to explore Merzouga properly: a sunrise climb, optional visits to Khamlia village for Gnawa music, lunch with a local family, or simply more time on the sand before returning to Errachidia.
Honest note: Two days from Errachidia is a generous amount of time for this region. You will not feel rushed. If you are the kind of traveler who likes to chat with shop owners, take second cups of mint tea, and photograph palm groves from the roadside, this is the right choice.

The morning drive southeast enters the Tafilalt oasis almost immediately. Your first stop is Erfoud, a town built on a prehistoric seabed. The surrounding hills are full of fossils—trilobites, ammonites, and orthoceras. We visit a local workshop where craftsmen cut and polish these stones into tables, sinks, and decorative objects. It is a fascinating glimpse into deep time: the Sahara was once an ocean.
Continue to Rissani, the last town before the dunes and a historic caravan crossroads. If today is market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday), you will walk through the open-air souk. Even on non-market days, the town has a distinct desert atmosphere—mud-brick architecture, donkey carts, and the smell of dates curing in the sun.
After lunch, the final stretch to Merzouga takes about 40 minutes. The landscape empties out. Then the dunes appear. You meet your camel caravan in the late afternoon and ride into Erg Chebbi as the sun drops. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Wake early for the sunrise. After breakfast at camp, you have options. Many guests choose to visit Khamlia, a small village on the edge of the dunes known for Gnawa music. Others prefer a 4x4 circuit around the dunes to see nomad tents, seasonal lakes, and the changing colors of the sand. You can also simply relax at a desert auberge with mint tea.
Lunch is included today at a local family's home or a traditional restaurant—your choice. By mid-afternoon, begin the return drive to Errachidia, arriving in the early evening.
